Only black may be worn at Comic-book stores around the world, in mourning. Why? You might very well ask. The reason for this is the announcement that Marvel was bought out by the Disney Company for a staggering $4bn at the start of last September. This has caused mass outrage among comic-hero fans, who are unsure about the idea of a hybrid ‘Movie mash-ups’. It does raise some unusual possibilities, such as a Wolverine / Sleeping Beauty Romantic Comedy or The Ghost Rider entering Wonderland with Alice and the Mad Hatter.
Fans may take comfort that some of their well loved super-heroes are safe from the change as other motion picture studios own the rights to characters and stories, such as ‘The Fantastic Four’, which is owned by 20th Century Fox. This change could help to improve the state of some Marvel films, such as the X-men spin-off, Origins: Wolverine which, quite frankly, was a load of nonsense. To be perfectly honest, anything would make that film better. Even if it was bought out by Poundland, there would probably be some sort of improvement.
Fans are worried about the high action films being ‘watered-down’ to meet the Disney image, or just plainly ruined. Disney do not have a good record for comic book films, they created Condorman, do I really need to say much more? But they have created just one movie masterpiece, in Disney Pixar’s The Incredibles. But it seems that Marvel and Disney have been working together for a while now and this change is just an official handover from company to company.
This brings me to think, will Marvel be included in all aspects of The Disney Company? Perhaps an Electra Ride at Disney World or The Incredible Hulk Live On Ice? Whatever the outcome, it can only be better for Marvel. There could be potential problems at Disney World as the stereotypical ‘Disney Princess’ fans rage war against the older sweaty comic book fans in their Daredevil merchandise.
No wonder the geeks are spooked, they wouldn’t stand a chance.
